PostSubject: Plane turning right at launch   Plane turning right at launch Icon_minitimeSat 6 Nov - 8:59

hey guys, Just wanting to find out is it normal for electric plans to naturaly want to bank left at launch?
So is it one of the following:
1-Bad throw
2-Needs to be over trimmed to accomodate natural torque
3-Needs alot of right roll at throw?
any info would be awesome as im new to electrics, cheers

Hi Davy, It could be a number of things.

First try a launch using only three quarter throttle until model acquires airspeed. This is to eliminate prop torque at take off until airspeed is attained.

Does the model fly level and true once airborne and at flying speed. This should eliminate rudder and aileron misalignment.

If above is OK then possible wing warp.

But if you are referring to your electric Mustang then Left roll on take off, is natural and indicates too much power before attained airspeed.

Back of power on launch and always be ready to correct roll after launch. This goes for all hand launch models as they are always close to stall when launched. Increase to full power as airspeed is attained.

Yay, had my 2nd sucessful flight and 2nd sucessful launch by mrs !!! lol. My first before this thread went left into long grass, then 2 today were good with 2 average landings with only minor foam nose squashed a little into prop. (saving grace those nose cones :-) ) Man...... talk a bout a wobbly start though lol, just had to remember to increase power once moving as you said admin. Thank you. Just got to hit the long grass landing zone. Man they still travel fast to get it right on the landing lol. Just as i landed trhe wind picked up so that was lucky. Quiet compared to my nitro plane, didnt run at full speed just at half at most. Didnt want to waste battery or burn out motor. Just need to get a supply of props now :-) I think maybe the folding kind would that be right? cheers

Davy. Good to see you trying.

First do not try and land in long Grass. Instead land on short grass. Long grass will do more harm to model.

When landing, Reduce power to one third and glide to to landing with nose of model slightly up.

Just before touch down take throttle to zero. when plane lands the prop will flick to horizontal being plastic it will take the slight bend when touching ground. but if power is still on the torque of electric motor will only break prop as it touches ground.

Model will slide on short grass and come to stop. Long grass stops model very fast and can separate wings. Also battery can move forward damaging battery compartment. Prop can not rotate to horizontal and grass will bend it back to far causing prop to break.

On mine I have stuck some clear wide sellotape under the oil Scoop to take the grazing on grass.and to protect the foam.

Hope this makes sense.

Pete.

Great info, cheers Pete Very Happy .
I have also cut a piece of polystyrene behind the battery to stop it sliding around, hot glued 2 small 3m hooks to either side of canopy and put a rubberband spread over canopy to stop it coming off. Works a treat.
Going to have another try now lol
Cheers
Just got back inside. Those adjustments worked a treat. Great to fly and great soft landing into the shorter grass :-) Flew for about 8 mins, not sure how much battery was left as i dont have a volt meter yet. Not sure if i can get readings off charger. (Turnigy Accucell 6) Cant find it on there. It does show up to 6 cells when balence charged it shows cell levels.(when finished) Go figure.

Well Ive broken, 2 props now and onto my 5 backups lol. Flew again today, launching much better with a little more power to prevent the drop down at throw. Got about 2 flights of 4-5mins each. Backup props are a little bigger than the stock ones.
Any idea what could cause random little up/down movements when there is no wind? Just a little worrying !
Cheers

Great to see you trying so hard Davy. Shocked

Try and keep it in one piece and I will try and catch up with you this weekend if weather looks fine.

Once you get to use the throttle a little more you will find you will get 15 to 20 minutes on a charge.

You will also notice the power will drop of quite quickly when the battery gets down, so be ready to land as soon as you see this. Unlike NiCads, lipos go right to end then pow, sudden drop, whereas Nicads slowly drop off.

Try not to let Lipos get to low as this is bad for them. That is to say 3 volts a cell is bottom line for safety. At about 2.8 cell start to destroy themselves to to rapid heating.

PostSubject: Re: Plane turning right at launch   Plane turning right at launch Icon_minitimeTue 9 Nov - 14:57

Could be a number of things Davy.

1)- a crook servo that is not centering properly when stick is at neutral.

2)- slight interference on receiver

3)- drop of in power on the Bec if motor drawing to many amps

4) Battery not providing enough amps for motor. What C rating is Battery.

5) interference from motor- not normally a problem if motor is a Brushless but at certain revs has been know to cause servos to jitter. 2.4 Ghz gear seems to eliminate problem.

do bench test on half flat battery by altering the rev range and monitor servo.

test elevator servo by applying slight pressure to servo while stick is centered to see if it jitters.
remember when aircraft is flying there is more pressure on elevator than stationary on ground so servo may not be strong enough under pressure.

Hey Pete, 1 piece......im amazed it still is lol. You'd probably cringe where I fly it!!! Shocked
1) seems ok
2) Not sure how to check
3) Have got a larger 20 amp esc ((came with a 10 amp) apparently the motor draws 11amps at max))
4) Turnigy 1000mAp 30C 3s
5) Pass
Elevator seemed to respond ok with pressure.
Had another fly tonight.......man all over the show with battery moving about in canopy !!! Normally have a piece of polystyrene holding it in place, but it wasnt there !!!! Im sure I put it in. May need to use a bit of foam to fill canopy or something !

Davy,Davy,Davy. Soooooo Sooory to hear you kill--Destroyed your P51. Sad

It happens to the best of us I assure you. Always a good learning curve tho.

Always remember Davy, if you don't want to break it then don't fly it. But where's the fun in that.lol

Still the cheap foamie's are a really good way to learn to fly and hone the skills. Much better than destroying a good 65 inch model.

Also Davy Check your messages from top message menu button.

roflmao, yes so true Pete.
Cant be safe all the time lol.
So what it did was, as I was coming in for a landing run it did an up/ down bob then and few seconds later did a big left roll straight into the hardest part of the paddock, I was about 4-5 mtrs off the ground !!!
Possitive it wasn't my controlling (yea right lol) so unsure what it was !!! Rolling Eyes
Hopefully send a new order off soon Very Happy

Hey davy,
I have been given a couple of free foamie kits to try out and write reviews on for a mate of mine,so I need to have a cull out in my hanger,I have a old gws 109e airframe that your electrics will be a good match and a couple of old epp profiles that you can have for a bash around plane.

ok......so flying new plane and it has done the same random right hand roll turn into long grass .
Luckily with only a broken prop.
So I think its the GWS naro Rx, what do you guys reakon?
Would rather change before another flight.
Maybe a duel synthesised one but dont know what they are like!!

Hey davy,
Lucky only broken prop,
Its funny that you think it is the RX,I was reading a review, build log on building and flying a GWS mustang,at end of review heather said that the GWS nano RX may not be up to he job,
I will go and find you a link Very Happy

Interesting, I think i'll try my other rx from my nitro(JR R700 a bit bigger than the Naro !!) But if it stops that glitch, then i'll know. It always happens when coming in to land and low to ground (typical) lol.

Ive swapped the rx over, and man the range difference is huge.
The Naro with possible glitch id only get about 10mtrs before it starts to rattle, my other one (though a bit bigger) I can get a good 50mtrs with aerial down and little noise and good response !!!.
So when weather is good, will be a bit more confident it wont random turn lol.
Touch wood Very Happy

Hey lads, would not having the plastic nose cover (not the one on prop) make a lot more unstable in flight ? (ie catching air) or would it be the buildup of duct tape lol

Hi guys,
just wondering, if I use a smaller sized prop (last one ive got !!!) do i need to compensate with more throtle, or will that cause more torque issues? Still trying to get the right balance.
cheers
